DHH Education

For our group micro-mentary we focus on DHH education. Our guiding question is, How do Educational strategies for DHH students move them towards success? We went to lots of FE's (external partners) and gather information that answers our question. Our FE partners were La Rabida Children's Hospital, Anixter, and Holy Trinity. A challenge for me was getting the video, recording and pictures together. I am proud of the video below.

Learning ASL!

This term was short and we focused on learning American Sign Language (ASL). We partnered with Lexicon, a company that teaches kids ASL. In this term, we didn't do three action projects we just focused on two: group micro-mentary and our individual. For both we had to include ASL and captions. A part of the individual project was going to a DHH community event out of school. I went to  a DHH mass, and if you want to learn about my experience, please check out my videos below.

I would like to thank our partner Lexicon who provided teachers so that we could learn sign language. I would also like to send out a special thank you to my teacher, Eugene, who taught us about deaf culture.
This is my first time learning sign language so I was nervous about  how I was going to learn it or if I would be good at signing. After my first few classes, I wasn't nervous anymore because it was easier than I thought it would be. ASL is hard for me when I try to have a conversation, but its easy for me to just sign words. For my first test on ASL, it was a little hard, because I didn't remember some signs that I learned, but I still passed.

ASL has made my point of view wider, and ASL has made me think of things that I don't think about, like how do deaf people hear music? What do they do if there’s an emergency and they don't have the blinking lights? I definitely changed my attitude towards the DHH community. How? Well, I feel like I understand them more. I watched videos showing how they live and what they have to do to communicate. Most of the videos I saw were for my homework, but I saw videos of people telling stories in ASL. Also, my external FE to the church really help me see in-person how they communicate and how friendly they are. An FE that inspire me was La Rabida Children's Hospital because it’s not like any other hospital. La Rabida would be considered like a second home for those children with disabilities. One of the reasons why it’s not like any other hospital is because the analogy of the hospital being a ship and the patients being the passengers. They also have professional clowns to entertain the patient and make them feel contable in their visit or their stay over there. They have play time, social time and learning time.
I would like to thank La Rabida Children's hospital.

Dear Judi and Lauren
Thank you for an amazing experience at the hospital. Not only did I has a great time but I also learned new things that I didn't know. I appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to talk to us.

My role in my group was being the videographer, so I contributed most of the videos from La Rabida and a couple of pictures from their too. I was proud of the videos that I took because I had a really hard time uploading them to the drive, but at the end I was able to!
One thing that I learned from doing a group project is to do your work with time so you don't hurry in the last couple of days and help one another with our parts so we can finish our project.
The course guiding question is How may we live "another person's" life and "step into their shoes"? my answer to that was. To go to places they might go or interact the way they do.
